If your membership hasn't renewed, or your bank has sent you a new card, this page should get you sorted in a couple of minutes. If it doesn't, flick us an email and we'll fix it.
First, sign in
Everything below happens on your account page, so you need to be signed in. Go to goodoil.news, choose to sign in, and enter the email address your membership is under. We'll email you a sign-in link or code. If it doesn't turn up within a few minutes, check your spam or junk folder.
Once you're in, open your account page from the member menu on the site.
Updating your card
Card payments are handled by Stripe, so your card details never sit with us. To put a new card on your account:
- Sign in and open your account page.
- Find your billing or card details and choose to update them.
- Stripe opens a secure card form. Enter your new card number, expiry date and security code, then save.
If your bank replaced your card. When a card is cancelled after a scam or a compromise, or simply reissued, the new card has a new number. Your old card stays on your account until you change it, and every renewal will keep failing against it. Follow the steps above with the new card in hand.
If Stripe offers you Link. Link is Stripe's optional saved-payment feature. It remembers a card so you can fill it in faster next time, and it may offer to send you a code to confirm it's you. It's entirely optional and you can skip it. You don't need to sign up for Link to update your card or to pay us. If it pops up showing your old card, or you'd rather not use it, choose to enter your card yourself and type in the new card's details.
If you pay by PayPal. PayPal memberships can't be switched over to a card on the site. Email us before you add a card, so you don't end up paying twice.
Checking your card update and renewal went through
There are two easy ways to tell.
- Your email. When a payment goes through, you should get a receipt by email. Check your spam or junk folder if it hasn't turned up.
- Your account page. Sign in and look at your account page. It shows the plan you're on, so if your membership is active you're all good.
If you've just updated your card after a failed payment, give it a little while and then check both. If your account page still doesn't look right, email us and we'll check it for you.
Got a notice that something bounced or failed?
Don't panic. A failed payment notice just means the last payment couldn't go through on the card we had for you, which is usually because the bank replaced or cancelled it. Your membership isn't lost. Update your card using the steps above and that sorts it.
If the notice says one of our emails couldn't be delivered to you, that's about your email address, not your payment. Check the address on your account page is right and that your inbox isn't full, or email us and we'll take a look.
All our prices are in New Zealand dollars and include GST. On your bank statement the charge may still show under our old name, The BFD.
Changing your plan
You can change plans yourself at any time from your account page, whether that's moving up to VIP for Ten@10 and Good Oil Insight, or dropping back to a cheaper tier. There's a rundown of what each plan includes on our page Is a Good Oil membership worth it?
Still stuck?
Email members@goodoil.news. Tell us the email address your membership is under and what's going wrong, and a screenshot of any error helps. Please never send your card number by email. We'll never ask for it.
Common questions
Why didn't my Good Oil membership renew?
The usual reasons are that your card expired, your bank cancelled or replaced it, the card was removed from your account, or there wasn't enough money on it when the payment ran. Update your card from your account page and the next payment will use the new one.
My bank replaced my card. What do I do?
Your new card has a new number, so the old one on your account will fail. Sign in at goodoil.news, go to your account page, open the billing or card details and enter the new card.
Do I need a Link account to update my card?
No. Link is Stripe's optional saved-payment feature and you can skip it. Choose to enter your card yourself and type in the new card's details.
How do I know my card update worked?
When a payment goes through, you should get a receipt by email, and your account page shows the plan you're on. If either doesn't look right, email members@goodoil.news.
Can I change my plan myself?
Yes. You can change your plan yourself at any time from your account page.
Who do I contact if I'm still stuck?
Email members@goodoil.news with the email address your membership is under and what's going wrong. Never send us your card number by email.
